Launching your own pharma brand through third-party manufacturing is simpler than setting up a plant, but you still need some groundwork. Here is a practical checklist.
Rules can change and can differ from state to state, so always confirm the current requirements with your State Drugs Control department or a consultant before you begin.
Business registrations
- A registered business (proprietorship, partnership, LLP or private limited company)
- GST registration
- A drug licence for selling or distributing medicines (usually a wholesale drug licence from your State Drugs Control department)
Your brand name
- Choose a name that is not similar to an existing medicine brand. Similar-sounding names can confuse doctors and chemists and can be refused.
- Search the trademark registry and consider filing a trademark application for your brand name.
Your product list
- Decide which therapeutic areas you will focus on
- For each product, note the composition, strength, dosage form and pack size
- Estimate how much you can sell in the first few months, so your first order is close to the MOQ and not far above it
Artwork and packaging
- Your logo and brand colours
- Carton, label and foil artwork for each product (your manufacturer can help with layouts)
- Pack style: blister, strip, bottle or sachet
Budget and payment
Plan for the advance payment on your first order, packaging material, transport and your marketing costs. At Alrightmed the payment terms are 35% advance with the order.
Choosing your manufacturer
Ask for a clear quotation with rates, MOQ, timelines and what is included. Visit the plant or ask for photos and a video call if you cannot travel.
When you are ready, send us your product list and we will reply with a quotation.
